Orofino Wins Top Wine at Gold Medal Plates Saskatchewan!!!

We are thrilled to announce that our Riesling was named top wine of the night at the prestigious Gold Medal Plates Regional Competition held in Saskatoon! Yay!!! A Gold Medal!! Here`s what head judge David Lawrason had to say about the wines in the competition. More info on this competition and the events held throughout the nation, check out www.jameschatto.com for all of the details.

 A B.C. Wine Showcase

The chefs of Saskatchewan presented one of the most stylistically diverse menus of the campaign, so it was no surprise that a broad range of wine styles emerged as well; with all but one being from B.C.

There was no unanimous decision on the best wine of show but the bright peachy and honeyed Orofino 2010 Riesling from the Simikameen Valley placed in the top three by all three judges. The runner up was Nichol Vineyard 2008 Cabernet Franc Syrah, a stylish, subtle and complex blend that faithfully showed its varietal and regional roots. Third place went Le Vieux Pin 2008 Adieu Pinot Noir, a firm, complex pinot named Adieu because it will be the last vintage – with the vineyard in the south Okanagan being replanted to reds more suitable to the sandy soils and hot climate.

Other wines donated to the chefs pairings included Tantalus 2009 Riesling, See Ya Later 2010 Gewurztraminer, Laughing Stock 2009 Blind Trust, Haywire 2010 Pinot Gris, Nk’Mip 2007 Syrah, Ganton & Larsen Prospect 2008 Pinot Noir, and finally, the only Ontario wine, Peninsula Ridge 2010 Cabernet Franc Rose. Le VieuxPin 2008 P’tit Rouge was poured to all during the Celebration and Awards portion of the evening.

Orofino hosts Movember Throwdown!

Throughout the busy harvest/crush month of November, owner/winemaker John Weber and our upstart cellarhand Aaron Godard will be dueling it out for the best moustache in the valley. In support of men`s prostate health, we will be participating in "Movember" to help raise funds for the cause. The Orofino Press

We have deftly created a blog that will follow the 2011 grape harvest from the vineyards to the barrels. Its not the glossy stuff created by the dozens of PR people we have on staff but the everyday dirt on the decisions we have to make, the progression of the harvest and insights on making wine in the beautiful Similkameen Valley. Virginia, John and our cellarhand Aaron Godard will post regular updates and pictures. What we are drinking, music we are listening to and maybe even the odd rant about the Saskatchewan Roughriders are all fair game. Its all things Orofino...

Meet Aaron Godard

We would like to introduce you to our newest member of the team - Aaron Godard. We imported Aaron from Saskatchewan after he did a temporary stint with us last crush season. He brings with him a diverse skill set derived from growing up in Columbia, obtaining a fine arts degree from the University of Saskatchewan, and some serious culinary know-how from time spent in restaurant kitchens. Best of all he is a good guy who believes in all things Orofino. You will find Aaron in the vineyard, the cellar, and in the tasting room. Welcome Aaron!!!

Orofino Named to the

Our winery was named to the "A-Team" in the current issue of Vines Magazine. The magazine asked a group of Sommeliers across the country a number of questions including their list of "go-to producers". Orofino was the only Canadian winery to be put on the list! We are thrilled to have been singled out for making delicious wines at fair prices!

When asked to identify the most underrated wine region, the sommelier panel identified the Similkameen Valley as one of three emerging regions! (New York State and Greece being the other 2 regions). The Similkameen is THE happening place in Canada`s wine scene!!!
